Love At First Site on BBC Radio 4
Atia Shah joins Sarfraz Manzoor on BBC Radio 4 to discuss Asian matrimonial websites. Atia met her husband Sheikh via SingleMuslim.com, the world's largest Muslim introductions agency.

Sarfraz explores the world of matrimonial websites aimed at the Asian diaspora around the world and the alternative they present to the traditional arranged marriage.

Arranged marriages may have traditionally been a part of Asian culture, but these days who is doing the arranging? Sarfraz examines the new market for Asian marriage websites, which allow the users to choose their potential partners based on such factors as their profession and height.

Are matrimonial websites a real alternative to more 'traditional' arranged marriages, or simply a new way of arranging them?

Even Asian weddings are feeling the pinch

Even Asian weddings are feeling the pinch
Asian weddings have been hit by the recession according to a new survey.

Website SingleMuslim.com says 58% of weddings planned by couples who met through them have been affected by the Credit Crunch.

It is believed the average Asian wedding costs around £20,000. The website recently polled its members to find out whether the Credit Crunch is affecting their wedding preparations.

Whilst 25% of respondents admitted that they will have to rein in their expenditure, cutting back on some of the costs associated with a Muslim wedding, 16% said that their plans had changed considerably.

18% even said that their wedding plans were now 'on hold' as a direct result of the Credit Crunch.

Adeem Younis, Managing Director of SingleMuslim.com, said: “ Organising a traditional Muslim wedding can be a major financial commitment, and it is understandable that couples are starting to look at reducing costs, or even postponing their big day for a few months.”

However there was some good news as 42% of respondents stated that their wedding plans had not changed in any way.

Adeem Younis said: “I’m delighted that so many o f our users are pressing ahead with their weddings and I wish them every success and happiness in their lives together.”

Young British Asians are ditching traditional arranged marriages in favour of finding their 'perfect' partner through the internet.

Online dating is increasingly popular with young Muslims, many of whom are forbidden from dating before marriage and have to accept their parents' choice of partner.
